Limit the usage of fireworks in Canton, Ohio
Limit the usage of fireworks in Canton, Ohio
The Issue
I am a resident of Canton, Ohio. I love my town but since the passing of Ohio House Bill 172, the enjoyment of my home has been severely impacted during the summer months. My family and I have been inconvenienced by repeated late night disturbances from the use of fireworks. The law as written is not being followed. I heard fireworks almost every single night starting around 10:30 pm until around 1 or 2 am for almost 6 weeks consecutively.
The loss of sleep was affecting my ability to get up early and work as well as my overall health. Other cities in Ohio such as Akron, Cleveland, Columbus and many others have implemented restrictions due to similar issues. I would like to know why the residents of Canton are being forced to endure this noise pollution when other towns in Ohio have restricted the use of fireworks to very specific times and days. Reynoldsburg for example has limited the usage to only on July 4th.
I live in beautiful Historic Ridgewood and unfortunately the beauty and tranquility of this neighborhood has been tarnished by the incessant late night noise pollution for most of June and July. I implore you to consider the toll that the noise and sleep deprivation is having on the residents of this area.
Fireworks cause millions of dollars worth of property damage per year. I know a nurse at Aultman hospital that has treated people every year with severe injuries from fireworks. She has seen people with their hands blown off. Veterans with PTSD and pets are traumatized by the noise. Fireworks rain down heavy metals that can sicken wildlife and pollute the air and water. Even the migratory patterns of birds are disrupted by fireworks.
I am asking for not a total ban on fireworks for civilian use but a heavier restriction on how frequently civilians are lawfully allowed to use them. I want everyone to be able to enjoy the holiday but people are not abiding by the law and it is affecting the wellbeing of their neighbors. I request an amendment to House Bill 172 to restrict the number of late night disturbances and provide adequate quiet hours for sleep at night.
I have encountered many other frustrated residents and I hope our city officials will be willing to listen and create change within the community.
