Limit the sale and use of fireworks in the UK to licence holders

The Issue

Every year, countless individuals and animals endure unimaginable distress and trauma due to the unrestricted use of fireworks across the UK. The distress this causes is well known to medical professionals, the emergency services, human and animal welfare groups, and the Government, yet the issue persists.

Fireworks are more than just a source of entertainment. They can lead to severe injuries, emotional disturbances, and even fatality. Statistics show that Guy Fawkes Night, New Year’s Eve, and Diwali periods see a significant rise in fire-related injuries and emergency admissions. Moreover, the impact on pets and wildlife is devastating. Animals, with their acute sense of hearing, perceive fireworks as explosions, leading to extreme fear, anxiety, and sometimes the risk of running away or hurting themselves in panic.

Current UK law permits the public to buy and use fireworks, which means that anyone, regardless of their understanding and responsibility, can pose a threat to public safety. To curb this, it is crucial that we implement a system where only licensed individuals or organisations who can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of firework safety are allowed to purchase and use them.

By restricting sales to licence holders, we can ensure that only those who are trained, responsible, and understand the potential hazards can manage fireworks displays, reducing the risk of accidents and keeping our communities safer. Other countries, such as Ireland and Australia, have successfully implemented similar restrictions, showing that this is a feasible and effective solution.

This system would also entail offering proper firework safety education and stricter penalties for non-compliance, ensuring individuals or groups bypassing the system are held accountable. The safety and wellbeing of our communities and wildlife should be a priority, and it is time the Government acts to protect us all from preventable harm.

We implore those in authority to take immediate action and legislate the sale and use of fireworks. Please sign this petition to show your support for a safer, more considerate celebration culture that respects both humans and animals alike.
