Limit the number of times Sky Sports can pick an EFL Team for TV fixtures in a season
The Issue
Football is meant to be shared by all. Yet, the sharp and unnecessary increase in television fixtures in the 24/25 season has made it incredibly challenging for fans to attend games. Every single EFL team has been promised to be shown at least 20 times on Sky Sports, with every single Championship side shown at least 24 times. Enough is enough. Our love for football and dedication for our favourite teams are being played against us. The variety in game schedules due to broadcasting rights has caused inconvenience to many, especially children and fans dependent on public transport.
Children now have to regularly decide between playing football or watching their favourite team on a Saturday morning, instead of being able to do both due to their team far more regularly kicking off at 12:30 on a Saturday. This not only impacts their development as footballers but also impacts attendances at many EFL clubs where any and all revenue is essential.
On the other hand, football fans relying on public transport are losing out because of an absence of feasible transport options for returning home from games rescheduled for Sky Sports. This is especially true for games that now kick off at times when public transport is not available. Sky Sports have continued to show no thought for the attending fans when making their TV fixture selections often making sure fans have to set off in the early hours of the morning to attend a game or leaving them with no way of getting home.
We request Sky Sports and relevant parties to ensure that an English Football League (EFL) team can only be chosen for television fixtures a maximum number of times in a single season. It's essential for football to remain a game that can be equally enjoyed at the venues and from home. By instituting this limit, we can preserve Saturday morning games for children and guarantee that match schedules will accommodate public transport timetables.
Football clubs, television broadcasters, fans, players, and organizers must unite in addressing this issue for the love of the sport and the audience it serves. Therefore, we call on you to implement this critical balance between broadcasted matches and match attendance. We are constantly told that without us fans the game is nothing and we are slowly but surely losing the fans. Please sign this petition and stand up for the football experience of every single fan.
