Limit the Number of Annual Building Permits to Preserve Green Spaces

The Issue

As a passionate lover of Florida's breathtaking natural beauty - its sun-kissed beaches, crystal clear freshwater springs, rich seafood bounty and marvelous wildlife; I share this story not as an isolated personal experience, but as a desperate call for action. Over-development is threatening our beautiful state. The seemingly unchecked approval of building permits not only strains our infrastructure but also pushes local flora and fauna out of their habitats.

There is an urgent need for the state and counties to put an annual limit on the number of building permits issued. This overzealous development not only robs us of our green spaces but also places significant stress on resources. If this rapid expansion continues unabated, we could potentially face a dire crisis with water management, facing issues such as water recycling without having the adequate resources to handle the process.

Recent statistics from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection reveal that as of 2019, Florida only has 31% of its land area classified as protected green space, which becomes smaller in the wake of unstoppable development, causing enormous stress on our integral ecosystems (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2019).

The time to act is now. We urge the state and county authorities to effectively limit building permits, devise strategies for sustainable development and prioritize preserving our treasured natural environment. Please sign this petition and protect Florida's unique natural beauty for future generations.
