Limit the Influence of the Florida Council of 100 in Public Affairs

The Issue

I am a concerned Florida resident and, like others in my state, am fretful about the overbearing influence of the Florida Council of 100 which is a private, non-elected, business group. Meeting twice yearly in private sessions, these multi-millionaire investors and real estate developers, without any political mandate, seem to have an unjust amount of sway over decisions that reverberate through our lives as Floridians.

Their influence spreads into trenches of the state affairs including zoning, building, and financial opportunities. The crux of the problem lies in the fact that these are not issues accented to be determined in closed corridors by the privileged few but should be the subject of a more democratic, inclusive process, ones that affect us all.

Hence, we are petitioning to end the privilege of the Florida Council of 100 to be consulted or involved in Florida’s public works. Elected officials and representative bodies should be who make these important decisions after considerable discourse with the public, ensuring that the best interests of the state and its residents are at the forefront of all public laws and policies.

Democratizing these decisions is not only a necessity but also a right to us Floridians, and we must ensure that such non-transparent and non-representative influence is curbed, paving way for a fair and inclusive decision-making process.
