My family and I recently found ourselves without a home due to the escalating cost of rentals in our area. This is not an isolated incident, but a widespread issue affecting many individuals across Washington State. The average monthly rent for a single-bedroom studio apartment has skyrocketed to $1,800, which means that those earning minimum wage are spending approximately 60% of their income on housing alone.

This situation is exacerbated by the fact that some individuals own multiple properties while others struggle to find one affordable home. Moreover, vacation rentals further reduce the availability of affordable housing options for residents.

We propose two solutions: first, limit the number of homes an individual can own; secondly, impose restrictions or bans on vacation rentals. These measures will help open up the rental and home buying market again for families being pushed out due to exorbitant costs.

According to data from Zillow (2020), Washington's median house price has increased by over 50% in the last five years alone - a rate far outpacing wage growth. This trend is unsustainable and unfair.

It's time we take action against this growing crisis in Washington State by implementing these proposed regulations on property ownership and vacation rentals.
