The Issue

In Indiana, I've witnessed an alarming practice that demands our urgent attention. Picture this: a Town Marshal, miles away from his jurisdiction, working security at a baseball, basketball, football game or concert. He's wearing the town's official uniform, driving the town's vehicle, and likely using the town's resources. As a concerned taxpayer and citizen, I find it unsettling that our public assets could be used for personal gain without any benefit to the community footing the bill.

The issue isn't just about one officer or one event. It presents a larger question of accountability and misuse of public resources. When police officers engage in off-duty work using their official credentials, uniforms, or vehicles, they introduce potential risks and liabilities. If something were to happen in this off-duty capacity, be it an incident or lawsuit, the financial and reputational burden could fall back on the taxpayer and the local government.

While police officers have the right to seek additional income, it should not come at the expense of public trust and transparency. Officers should not use taxpayer-funded resources and their official status when embarking on side jobs. Such practices could result in conflicts of interest, diminish public trust in law enforcement, and improperly allocate community resources.

We propose a clear and enforceable policy that prohibits officers from using public assets for off-duty work unless they are directly benefitting the community they serve. This policy should include restrictions on wearing official uniforms, using vehicles, or leveraging any other public means for private employment. Ensuring that officers engage in off-duty work within a framework that protects public interests and upholds community trust should be priority.

Other states have enacted similar policies with success, reducing risks and maintaining public confidence in law enforcement. It's time for Indiana to follow suit, ensuring that our police remain wholly committed to serving and protecting their communities without the shadow of private interests.

Sign this petition to urge Indiana lawmakers to introduce legislation that clearly defines and limits the scope of off-duty work for law enforcement officers. Let's take a stand for accountability, transparency, and fairness in our communities.
