The Issue

On August 21st, 2024, my beloved son was brutally murdered during an armed robbery and carjacking at a BP gas station on Linwood and Indiana in Kansas City. This tragic event took the lives of one and left two others seriously injured, while two women were traumatized by the ordeal. The man responsible for this heinous crime committed seven crimes in one day before he was apprehended. Shockingly, he had previously been sentenced to 10 years for armed robbery, served only three, and failed to report for parole.

In the face of such violence, the BP gas station locked its doors, offering no refuge to those in imminent danger, even though they had bulletproof glass protecting them. The staff merely shouted that the police had been called, leaving the trapped victims to fend for themselves with nowhere to hide.

This senseless act of violence underscores the urgent need for preventive measures in high-crime areas of Kansas City, particularly at gas stations. We need to act now to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again. We, the concerned citizens of Kansas City, are calling for a change in operating hours and a heightened security presence at gas stations in these areas.

These stations should not be open 24/7 in high-crime zones. Implementing restricted hours will limit the opportunities for crime to occur during late-night hours when fewer people are present, and the potential risks are higher. Additionally, the presence of professionally trained security guards can serve as a powerful deterrent against criminal activities, providing a layer of protection for both employees and customers. These guards should be a standard requirement, especially for businesses operating in known risky areas.

We must advocate for businesses to invest in the safety of our communities. It's crucial for gas station owners and city officials to collaborate in creating stricter policies to safeguard lives and prevent future tragedies. By showing our collective support for this petition, we can push for necessary legislative changes and hold businesses accountable for their role in community safety.

We urge you to sign this petition to bring about immediate policy changes, ensuring gas stations like the one on Linwood and Indiana become safer places for everyone. Together, we can create a more secure environment for our city and prevent other families from experiencing the overwhelming loss that mine has endured. Please sign now and make a difference in our community's safety.
