Everyday it is an act of bravery to walk or bike along the sidewalks of Roosevelt.

As a resident who has felt the fear first hand, it is unacceptable that eBikers are allowed to travel at speeds as high as 30 mph.

This is a shared space and such reckless speeds are a significant safety hazard.

The result of these unchecked speeds? A friend was struck by an eBike travelling at high speed in the opposite direction and landed in the hospital. It is evident that the current status quo is not acceptable. 

Roosevelt, like other streets, are not the Indianapolis Speedway, but the dangerous behavior of a few eBike users (nearly 100% male) make it feel exactly like that. These scorching speeds do not respect the municipality's intention of creating a safe space for all users – walkers, cyclists, and eBikers alike.

We urge the Key West city council to introduce legislation limiting ebike speeds to 15 mph on sidewalks and pedestrian areas in Roosevelt. This modest change can ensure the safety of all sidewalk users and potentially avoid future accidents that could result in serious injuries.
