Limit Cell Phone Usage in West Middle School
The Issue
As parents of children in Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village, Englewood, and Centennial, CO, we have observed and researched the harmful effects of unrestricted cell phone use in schools. It is tremendously detrimental to our children's education as it causes distractions and affects their focus. More so, it impacts their social and emotional development by reducing face-to-face interactions and enhancing dependency on virtual communication. There is also mounting evidence suggesting the potential negative impact on brain development associated with extensive cell phone and social media use.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has cautioned about children's overexposure to digital media and suggested implementing practical limits on digital media consumption for children to counteract these negative effects (source: American Academy of Pediatrics). Furthermore, a study from the London School of Economics found that schools that restricted cell phone usage saw a boost in test scores (source: London School of Economics).
Our primary aim should be to provide a conducive learning environment for our young students at West Middle School. Let's take a step in this direction by supporting this bell-to-bell phone free policy phones for our middle school students. We as educators and parents need to give our children the opportunity to focus on their studies, on connecting with peers, and on connecting with themselves.
