The Issue

I'm writing this petition as a personal plea. As a retiree living on a fixed income, the prospect of an 8% rent increase has become an overwhelming concern for me and many others in similar situations. The daunting task of managing increased housing costs on a limited budget threatens our ability to live stable and secure lives.

For residents in Pennsylvania, where the cost of living is already notoriously high, such substantial rent hikes can make the difference between meeting basic needs or not. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, inflation increased by about 4% over the past year, yet my landlord is implementing a rent increase that is double this rate. Clearly, tying rent hikes to a reasonable measure such as the Consumer Price Index rather than arbitrary market rates would be a fairer approach.

Excessive rent increases can lead to displacement, contributing to the growing issue of homelessness in our communities. The Pennsylvania Housing Partnership reports that the state is facing a dire shortage of affordable rental homes, with thousands struggling to find housing within their means. We must act now to protect our vulnerable populations from being forced out of their homes due to unsustainable rent increases.

I urge local policymakers to enforce guidelines that limit annual rent increases to a percentage in line with the actual cost of living adjustments. This can stabilize housing for seniors and low-income families currently at the mercy of market fluctuations.

Please sign this petition to push for practical and compassionate rent control legislation that aligns rent increases with the genuine cost of living changes, offering residents the chance to remain in their homes without undue financial strain. Together, we can work toward a fair and just housing policy for everyone.
