The Issue

As we all stand together, I'm reminded of the devastating loss of my brother just over a year ago in a heartbreaking hit-and-run accident on North point Blvd, a tragedy compounded by the courts' ruling that he'll be deemed partially responsible for his own death due to the absence of a crosswalk within a mile radius. The weight of this injustice has been crushing me. Since his passing, the roads have continued to claim more lives, with numerous pedestrians falling victim to the same stretch of road, a grim reminder that change is long overdue. It's clear that we need to come together to demand action. In his honor, I'm launching a petition to advocate for a street light and crosswalk, striving to create a safer environment for all. My hope is that no family will have to endure the anguish of losing a loved one only to be told they're at fault. I invite you to join me in this fight, to lend your voice to this cause, and help garner support for this petition, so we can make a difference and spare others the pain I’m experiencing. Please join me for the next three Saturdays getting the signatures needed

Responded
Thank you for contacting the State Highway Administration (SHA) on behalf of the local community and sharing their concerns regarding pedestrian safety along MD 151 (North Point Boulevard). SHA’s District 4 office has received your petition requesting street lighting and crosswalk improvements and will review it as part of our traffic safety evaluation process. As part of this review, we will review the crash history, roadway conditions, traffic patterns, pedestrian activity, and any existing or planned infrastructure improvements within the corridor. Public input and community feedback are considered as part of the evaluation process for potential safety improvements. Because MD 151 is an extended roadway corridor, additional location-specific information related to areas of concern may assist us in identifying and evaluating feasible safety enhancements. If there are any requests for safety enhancements to the roadway, they can be made through our customer service portal (link available here: https://www.roads.maryland.gov/mdotsha/pages/index.aspx?pageid=519), where they will be reviewed by our traffic engineering team. Requests for new sidewalk generally require county participation. Information about our sidewalk retro-fit program is available here: https://roads.maryland.gov/mdotsha/pages/Index.aspx?PageId=707. [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]
