We reached out to Kroger on Cedar Spring's Store Director this week about half their parking lot lights being burned out and the lights on the sides of their building which usually light up the sidewalks being out rendering them some of the darkest sidewalks in Oak Lawn by email and have not yet received a response. Please read the below email sent to them and please send one yourself to rick.williams@kroger.stores.com to make sure those dark, dark streets are lit up. Hi Rick, As you probably know there is an increased scrutiny on lighting in the Oak Lawn area right now due to the Light Up Oak Lawn campaign and the recent string of attacks in the area. Your store has lighting issues which need to be addressed. On the Douglas Ave side, only one exterior light is shining at night which means that the sidewalk is very dark and unsafe. There are many lights there, but they are not working. If all of those lights were on at night it would really help out with the safety of people walking home from bars at night or even walking over from Ilume Park to the store which I personally do frequently. Also, we staged the Light Up Oak Lawn event last night at the Library and your lot, and the irony of several parking lot lights being out including one at the entrance (which would illuminate the sidewalk) was hard to miss. We are going to be pushing for businesses and property owners to step up and do their part in helping to keep our community safe in the near future and it would be great if we had some allies in the business community who would step up and do their part. I think that Kroger can do this by installing brighter lights especially on the sidewalk areas, increasing exterior camera coverage and/or visibility that cameras are present (signs that state that it is under surveillance, etc.), and joining in on later discussions of a Public Improvement District later on down the line. The gay community lovingly calls your store Krogirl and we appreciate everything you have done as an anchor of our community. Please let me know if you can fix or increase the brightness of your exterior lighting for us. You can find the petition I created which has over 1200 signatures here: https://www.change.org/p/lights-cameras-action-increase-security-in-oak-lawn-to-reduce-crime Media Coverage: http://www.nbcdfw.com/video/#!/news/local/Oak-Lawn-Community-Demands-Lights/339208131 http://www.wfaa.com/videos/news/local/2015/11/01/citizens-want-more-security-after-oak-lawn-attacks/75025482/ If you can let me know how you will update the lighting situation around your building I will be sure to update everyone with the good news.
