Hello Concerned Citizens,
Dallas Tavern Guild Director Michael Doughman just posted this message on social media:
"This is a media campaign and only one of the assaults has been identified as a hate crime. Our local media is creating a media firestorm that doesn't really exist. We have one of the safest areas in Dallas by police reports. Almost every attack is on individuals walking alone, late at night and intoxicated. Never a good idea. I hate that the media is making the area sound so dangerous. It's not dangerous if you just behave smartly."
I'm sure you all agree that this is a ludicrous statement. Crime is crime! Hate or not.
The reason people are walking at night intoxicated is because there is not enough safe parking provided by the bars.
Dallas City Development Code calls for bars and restaurants to provide 5 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet of space. Station 4 alone is 24,000 square feet. Do they provide 120 parking spaces? Do the bars provide enough parking spaces to keep us safe?
If the Dallas Tavern Guild and other organizations stepped up to make the parking situation better so that people weren't having to walk alone at night we would have a safer Oak Lawn.
