Lift the ban on non-water drinks at Evergreen Middle School
The Issue
I've always cherished my ginger ale, sipping it during class, without ever causing a spill. It was a small joy that helped brighten up long school days. But now, Evergreen Middle School in Evergreen, CO, has imposed a ban that allows only water in water bottles. The one class where I could enjoy my ginger ale recently followed suit, leaving me personally devastated. I'm sure I'm not alone—many students have their favorite drinks that make their day a little bit better, and now they're deprived of that comfort.
Banning all beverages except water might seem like a logistical simplification, but it doesn't acknowledge the carefulness and responsibility many students have shown in the past. Allowing drinks like my ginger ale or other favorite beverages can be done without compromising cleanliness or order. Schools across the country have successfully managed this by establishing manageable rules rather than blanket bans.
Instead of a complete prohibition, let's work together to establish guidelines that provide freedom and responsibility. Allowing students to consume non-water beverages with clear rules—such as spill-proof containers or restricting beverages during labs or sensitive areas—could address concerns while respecting students' preferences.
This ban might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but personal choices and small comforts matter in our daily lives. So many students rely on these comforts. Why should anyone be denied a small joy during their school day when there are clear, achievable solutions?
We urge the Evergreen Middle School administration to reconsider their stance and allow students some leniency when it comes to non-water beverages. By implementing reasonable guidelines, we can maintain a clean and orderly environment while supporting students’ need for personal choices and comforts.
Help us restore this simple joy by signing this petition and showing the school that students and community members alike value consideration, balance, and practical solutions in our everyday lives. Together, we can make a change that respects individual preferences and enhances our school experience.
