Life Without Parole: Clemency for Roberta Bell
The Issue
My Name is Jazzmin Bell. My mother, Roberta Bell is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. She has been in prison since I was 3 and I'm now 34 years old. My two siblings and I have suffered horribly during the past 30 years that she has been incarcerated. She is a good person, who does not deserve to die in prison.
Roberta was subjected to some horrible abuse when she was young - she was even pregnant at the age of 14, yet no one in her adult life ever reported the obvious fact that someone had committed statutory rape against a minor. The details of her life have been laid out by her former employer, Joanne Kehr, an attorney who had a thriving law practice from 1978 - 2016. She wrote a character letter supporting my mother's clemency and stated, "I will happily give her good references...to anyone with whom she seeks employment upon her release. If she is interested in becoming a care provider for my husband, (who has Parkinson's disease) Philip and I will welcome her into our home. For the foregoing reasons, I respectfully request that Roberta Riley Bell be granted immediate full clemency." The letter in its entirety (and the long list of my mother's accomplishments while incarcerated) can be read on my mother's profile page. She is #3 on the CAN-DO Top 25 Women Who Deserve Clemency list.
She's missed a great deal out of not only my life but the lives of my brother and sister, as well. Roberta now has a 12 year old grand-daughter named Riley, a 8 year old named Riyan, 3 year old named Marley, a 2 year old named Rowen (Gracie) and a 1 year old named Tamarra that she has never met. Her eldest granddaughter Riley suffers from a very rare disease that unfortunately causes her to be admitted into the hospital several times a year and also a granddaughter who has autism. Reasons and situations like these are reasons we need “Grandma Roberta” home! She deserves to be in her family's life and we want her back. She has made some bad decisions in her life, but the woman she is and has become on her journey is above amazing. My mother has been subject to many bad circumstances during her time incarcerated, she is a victim of FCI Dublin. She showed strength, boldness, integrity and care for her she took a stand for not only herself but for the other women who were victims as well. She has touched so many people in so many ways and became a huge voice for other women incarcerated that could not speak for themselves and for that she should be able to come home. She’s more than deserving. Life is a long time. We cannot have back the time we've missed with her but we can begin to make new memories and special times if she can come home and we can be a family again. We are all she has and she is all we have! Please sign this petition for clemency, so President Donald J. Trump can see the outpouring of support that she so greatly deserves.
She is our mother, my best friend, a grandma to 5 beautiful little girls and the cutest granddog. She’s amazing! I want the world to know and see it for themselves. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Jazzmin Bell
