Petition for In-Person Graduation Ceremonies

Petition for In-Person Graduation Ceremonies
The Issue
Graduating from a university is a milestone accomplishment that should be celebrated in person. With all the COVID restrictions, Liberty University has preemptively decided to have a virtual graduation in May. While understandable, this decision lacks consistency with other events hosted during the semester by the university. For example, Student Activities has hosted several events with a 250-person capacity, along with the large weekly gathering for Campus Community. Sporting events can also be attended with a capacity restriction. This academic gathering should be allowed to take place with the proper protocols and the same capacity restrictions as other events on campus. Within the university, most school's graduating classes are considerably smaller than the 250-capacity allowed. Therefore, we propose having each school’s graduation in person across the various large capacity spaces on campus, including the newly renovated Vines Center, Liberty Arena, the Towns Auditorium, the LaHaye Event Space, the Alumni Ballroom, the Concert Hall, and other large classrooms. Additionally, Liberty could host each of the school’s graduation ceremonies on different days of the week so as to avoid congestion. As graduating seniors this May, we believe the hard work of students and the investments of parents should be honored with in-person ceremonies for each school. We respectively request that the administration considers this proposal.
