Hire Anthony Grant as the next Men's Head Basketball Coach
The Issue
Anthony Grant is a remarkable basketball coach and would be a solid addition to the current Liberty Flames athletic staff. Anthony Grant has over 20 years of college coaching experience in which he has exemplified an uncanny ability to recruit, grow, and lead young men.
Coach Grant got his footing in college coaching as assistant to the great Billy Donovan. As you are aware, Billy Donavon has developed a reputation as not only a man of high basketball IQ, but also of sound character. Having spent 12 years under the tutelage of Donavon, Coach Grant brings a similar disciplined yet ambitious approach to the game. As an Associate Head Coach, Grant was able to help lead the Florida Gators to the 2006 NCAA Championship. It should also be noted that Grant’s grooming of younger players during that season helped lead to a subsequent Final Four run in 2007. Unfortunately, Grant was unable to enjoy this second championship as he had moved on to take his first head coaching opportunity.
It is in our great state of Virginia that Coach Grant first took the head coaching reigns at Virginia Commonwealth University. In his short stint with the Rams, he lead the team to a 75 - 25 overall record and a .833 conference winning percentage. Highlights of his tenure include upsetting Duke in the 2007 NCAA tournament and developing two future NBA 1st round draft picks (Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders). Grant’s three years laid the foundation for the best Mid-Major dynasty on the East Coast. Everyone knows Shaka Smart’s name, but it was Anthony Grant who paved the way for success in Richmond.
Coach Grant’s most recent stop was as the Men’s Head Basketball Coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. It was there in the heart of the South, where football rules the headlines and the university budgets, that Grant showed his true mettle. While constantly being overshadowed by the football team’s multiple national championships, Grant went to work retooling a program that had not been to the NCAA tournament since 2006. Over the course of the next six years, Grant led the Tide to two second place finishes in the SEC and three post-season tournaments. While those marks do not sound stellar, within the proper framework, one can see Grant’s resolve. Having to play against powerhouses Kentucky and Florida twice a year while recruiting out of a talent-scarce home state, leaves Alabama’s program in dire straights. Yet Anthony Grant remained steadfast and worked hard in coaching Alabama to a winning record 5 out of his 6 years.
Now Liberty has the opportunity to snag a coach with both collegiate success and the sense that he still has something to prove. A man who spent 12 years building a premier Division 1 basketball program can now start a true winning tradition at your school. Let's not forget that Coach Grant was picked to be the successor at Florida during the tumultuous Summer of 2007. And now you have the opportunity to have him lead your Flames. In summation, Anthony Grant isn't just the coach Liberty needs, he is the coach Liberty deserves.
