Dear friends of Sea-Eye,
Finally, the time has come: This afternoon, the SEA-EYE 4 set off on its fourth rescue mission this year! An important step in these turbulent times, in which the political headwinds have been blowing very hard lately: All the more excited we can now announce that we have a particularly broad tailwind in our sails on this mission.
This is the first mission to be partly financed by federal funds. The German Federal Parliament had decided in November 2022 to support civil sea rescue with budgetary funds – and this funding has now also been granted to us by the Federal Foreign Office.
But that's not all: this mission is also being funded in more ways than seldom before. For example, we are grateful for funding from the UN Refugee Agency, the German Postcode Lotterie and municipal funds from the German cities of Wolfsburg and Greifswald. And of course: for the support from hundreds of private donors who have made our work possible for years!
All of this encourages us: civil sea rescue is supported by an ever wider alliance. The fact that after so many years of humanitarian emergency at the EU's external borders, the German government is finally taking action and actually contributing to the financing of a civil sea rescue mission is also a very important political signal. Now we have to keep up the pressure to ensure that this remains the case in the future.
So full speed ahead now! The joint crew of Sea-Eye and German Doctors is confidently setting off for the Mediterranean – to save as many lives as possible in the coming weeks with broad support at their back.
Yours
Gorden Isler
- Chairman of Sea-Eye e. V.
