The addition of the newly proposed 31 speed humps to the Locust Hill subdivision will affect every resident in some way. Studies have shown the additions of speed humps and speed bumps on a large scale like this are more likely to negatively effect the community than they are to change bad driving. In fact, they are just as likely to encourage new bad driving habits such as wild acceleration between humps to try and make up time or swerving off of the roadway to try to go around the humps. In addition, speed humps are shown to decrease property values, increase road maintenance costs, increase noise levels, increase air pollution due to constant braking and acceleration, decrease vehicle fuel economy, add unnecessary wear and tear to your vehicle, and can increase the time it takes for emergency services to reach you by 10-13 seconds per hump. Ask yourself, is it worth risking a loved ones life? The people who live at the back of our neighborhood and farthest from the entrances could have over a minute added to the time it takes emergency services to reach them. For these reasons, we the residents of Locust Hill, are asking that the board cancel the installation of new speed humps and instead pursue other speed calming measures laid out in the traffic calming report first. The use of radar displays would be a logical first step to traffic calming. This would not only be a visual deterrent, but would also collect valuable data on how much speed really is a problem by recording the speeds of passing vehicles. If analysis of this data shows that additional measures are needed, then the addition of speed humps should be in areas of highest concern as identified by the radar displays recorded data. This is an issue that affects all of us, and not one to be taken lightly. Measures should be taken to make our community a safer and better place. I urge you to consider the negative repercussions of the large scale installation of speed humps that has been taken up by the board. Look at the alternative traffic calming measures outlined in the report and ask yourself is the boards plan really the best course of action? Or do we need to move in calculated increments? Not only will radar displays be a means of traffic calming, but a valuable data collecting tool that could be used to determine the next steps. Please, sign this petition to show the members of the board that we are concerned, and that we do not agree with the planned course of action.
