Dear Friend of the LGBTQ and Historic Preservation community:
Please support the nomination of the Bernie Michels-Thom Carey house to the National Register of Historic Places. The Michels-Carey apartment is the site of the initial organizing, planning and formation of the Center for Social Services, the future LGBT Community Center. Together, SOHO and Lambda Archives have submitted the nomination to the National Register. We need your letters and emails in support of the nomination and preservation of the Michels-Carey house.
Making the Bernie Michels-Thom Carey house a significant and important part of the LGBTQ community’s “coming out” visibility that for so long took place in the shadows and in the closets. Not having visible places to meet, our community met in apartments, private homes, bars and in social halls to organize and validate our lives. This house is one of San Diego’s most important early LGBTQ sites and deserves the nomination and its preservation as a visible reminder of our history.
It's as simple as this: "I, [your name], support the nomination and preservation of the Bernie Michels-Thom Carey house at 2004 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, due to its significance as part of the beginnings of the social and political visibility of the LGBTQ community in San Diego."
Letters and emails should go to the State Office of Historic Preservation and San Diego’s Historical Resources Section.
