Discrimination is still a big issue in society whether its racism, anti religious hate, sexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia or any other kind of prejudice. Decades of work towards equal rights and work the reduce inequalities experienced in our society have shown that the number 1 way to reduce inequalities is for people to live, work and learn alongside each other. Where we have segregation and isolation myths, fear and stereotypes continue to prosper and grow.
Research shows us 40% of trans people do attempt suicide, young Lesbian gay and bisexual people are significanntly more likely to self harm than their heterosexual counterparts and the word "gay" is still a word not just associated with sexuality but with negativity in day to day usage by some.
The answer to these challenges is therefore not to create a segregated space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) people to be hidden away at the expense of the tax payer and funding taken away from other mainstream schools, but for more effort to be put into making our entire education system inclusive and a posiitve experience for children from all backgrounds including those who are LGBT. We need to highlight schools of what ever type that have example of best practice for stopping all bullying and ensure other schools follow their lead.
No one can question the intention beyond those involved in the idea of an LGBT school but the reality of what such a school would achieve and impact it would have on society is one where LGBT people would suffer more not less.
