We need your help to stop the demolition of Neponsit Medical Center by signing this petition; it's located at Jacob Riis Park on the beach. The building serves as a safe haven of protection, privacy, & blocks the wind. The building & beach is rich w/historical significance & was constructed in 1915, so over 100 years old. From 1915 to 1955 served as a hospital for those w/tuberculosis, from 1956-1998 served as a elderly facility. The beach has serviced women, minorities, & the LGBT community when we had no rights & couldn't participate in other beaches because of discrimination & segregation from our government. This beach services as a safe haven for people to express themselves authentically w/out fear of judgment, harassment, and abuse. Wear what you want here, be who you want here, as long as you respect everyone. We are a community which would be demolished if this building is no longer a part of this beach. This beach is for everyone to enjoy. We do chase out what we call "creeps", who are literally there to make other's uncomfortable. There has never been an altercation on this beach, nor has their ever been a robbery, or any other harmful crime. We are a peaceful & fun community. Many have gone topless & nude the way that God made us. I am a straight nudist female & has always been welcomed & felt this beach to be my safe haven/happy place. Without this building & beach, I'm sure many people of the community will commit suicide w/out having this place to turn to. With mental health in America being a major issue, we need to keep a place for us all to enjoy.  I have been coming here for 10 years to this section of the beach & I know people who have been coming for over 50 years. We are begging & pleading for your help, we can not do this w/out you. Let's be unified & reach our goal. Demolition date is unsure, we only know it will be starting this month which will cause this section of the beach to close. Their plan is to put a playground in replacement, though there is a playground just about 200 yards away. Many playgrounds are empty in this generation. We need to preserve our history & historical significance. I wrote to the Landmark Preservation Commission to make Neponsit Medical Center a Scenic Landmark/Historical District to stop the destruction.
