The Issue

My mother, who was battling a mental illness, was arrested on September 15th for armed robbery. Prior to this, on September 4th, she was admitted to Lexington Medical Center for her condition, but she was, unfortunately, disregarded. It’s heart-wrenching to think that if she had received the appropriate care and support, this arrest might never have happened.

I want to emphasize that this isn't about excusing her actions, but rather highlighting a critical issue: the lack of adequate mental health care. Mental illness is a very real and serious issue that is too often overlooked. When people who are suffering from mental illness don't receive the help they need, it can lead to devastating consequences, ruining not only their lives but also affecting their families and communities.

This petition aims to bring attention to the shortcomings in our mental health care system, specifically the neglect shown by Lexington Medical Center and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department towards individuals with mental health issues. We need to ensure that everyone has access to the mental health care they need to prevent such tragedies from happening again. By signing this petition, you are advocating for better mental health support and a more compassionate approach to those who are suffering.
