Why this petition matters

E-Hallpass is a website that requires students movements around the school to be tracked online and saved in a record for future analysis by administrators and computers. This system is extremely creepy, and a clear violation of student's privacy.

It also notifies teachers and parents if a student is "abusing" the hall pass system, like if they take too much time, or use it too often. Students don't deserve the extra stress of considering how their bathroom habits will be perceived by others when they leave the classroom, especially since mental health is an enormous problem among students. We should be trying to improve that, not make it worse.

As well, E-Hallpass takes a long time to use, wasting both the students and the teachers time, as well as being counterproductive to the stated goal of increasing the amount of time students spend in class.

Also, privacy violations never just go away. E-hallpass is capable of telling administrators with whom you happen to leave at the same time as, which is very creepy. E-hallpass knows your age, who your parents are, who your friends are, what classes you're taking, and what classes you're struggling in. That's a lot of very sensitive information the school is forcing you to give to this company, leaving it vulnerable for hackers to hold for ransom, or to sell to identity thieves so they can ruin your life.

Teachers have also brought up that the system would be useful to know where students are in case of an active shooter situation. However, a paper system would be more effective, since teachers don't have to spend the time getting on their computer and opening e-hallpass. There's also no evidence this system would even help in case of an emergency. To actually retrieve a student, some staff member, presumably the security officer, would have to put themselves in danger, which may not be worth the risk. It's also possible the security officer would choose not to go in, like what happened during the Parkland shooting (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43164634). Students are also smart enough to know to get out if they can especially since information would be provided via the announcements. It would be even better if we were allowed to bring our phones to the bathroom, since we could use them to call for help. Also, consider which is more likely: There's a school shooting at our school, which are extremely rare events, and E-hallpass, despite the issues above, is able to help one or two people; or someone hacks E-hallpass's servers and sells all the information, affecting every person in the school.

Sign the petition to help get the system removed from the school.
