Mayor Stoney - Join the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy

Problem
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's October 2018 report makes it clear: "unprecedented" changes must be made to avert Global warming above 1.5 degrees celsius. The report states that in the next decade, humanity will make the choice - whether to avert runaway climate change - or to place the wellbeing of future generations before short term comfort and do the great work of dismantling the carbon-based economy. Now is the time for unprecedented action.
Solution
Did you know that there is a global organization of city mayors tracking carbon and implementing real policies to fight climate change at the local level?
A majority of major economic centers - like New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and London, are already deeply involved. Major cities like Philadelphia, DC, Atlanta and Boston are in. Hip Cities like Austin, Berkeley and and Portland are in. Smaller southern cities are like Birmingham, Charlotte and Blacksburg are in. And yet Richmond is only "considering" membership, "at some point in the future," according to the Mayor's office.
Climate change is now. The time for action is now. The time for Mayor Stoney to join the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy - and guide Richmond towards a liveable future - is now.
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is "the broadest global alliance committed to climate leadership, building on the commitment of over 9,000 cities and local governments from six continents and 127 countries representing more than 770 million residents." *
"More and more cities and local governments across the globe are heeding the call to act, and their response could not be more urgent as nations begin the work of meeting the goals of the Paris climate agreement." *

My name is Barry O'Keefe - I am an artist, teacher, and lifelong resident of the City of Richmond. I work at VCU, the Visual Arts Center, Gallery 5 and Milk River Arts. My wife and I welcomed our first child, Cyrus, last May. It brings me tremendous grief to think of the ecologically devastated world that he will be inheriting from us. I personally believe that it is my responsibility, and the responsibility of every elected official, to act to avert the most catastrophic effects of climate change.
