Dear Rebecca Jollotta, PMHNP,
We are writing as fellow Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners from across the United States and around the world to express our support, solidarity, and respect during this difficult time. We want you to know that you are not alone as you navigate the circumstances surrounding your care of Lindsay Clancy and the scrutiny of the clinical decisions you made in the course of that care.
As PMHNPs, we understand the complexity and profound responsibility involved in caring for patients experiencing severe psychiatric illness, particularly during the perinatal period. These situations can evolve rapidly and may involve overlapping symptoms, changing clinical presentations, and significant treatment challenges. Providing appropriate care requires careful assessment, ongoing monitoring, sound clinical judgment, clear communication, and thoughtful treatment planning.
Your professionalism, compassion, and dedication to your patients have been evident throughout this process. The care you described, including your efforts to communicate, monitor symptoms, address concerns, and provide appropriate clinical support, reflects the commitment and diligence that our profession demands.
We also recognize that psychiatric practice often involves uncertainty and circumstances that can be extraordinarily difficult to anticipate, even when clinicians act thoughtfully and diligently. Caring for patients with serious psychiatric illness carries an immense responsibility, and the weight of that responsibility is deeply understood by those who work in our field.
