Letter In Support of Weston Board of Ethics Volunteers

The Issue

Dear Members of the Weston Town Board of Selectmen,

I am writing to express my concerns and dissatisfaction with actions being considered against the entire Board of Ethics. The situation has escalated beyond reason, and I believe it is time to take a step back and consider the consequences of drastic actions on our community.

First, the former chair of the Board of Ethics has taken full responsibility for the procedural errors that occurred. Per established guidelines, the remedy for such errors is to revoke the opinion, which has already been done. Additionally, the committee has volunteered to undergo FOIA training to address any concerns related to procedural knowledge.

Furthermore, there has not been a clear statement of the basis for potential removal. Since someone has already taken responsibility for the procedural error, this situation appears to be retaliatory in nature.

This course of action will have a chilling effect on volunteerism in our town. Why would individuals volunteer their time and expertise if they risk being publicly attacked for a mistake someone else made? It is crucial to recognize the value of the volunteers who devote their time to improving our community.

Simply put, the town should replace the two board members who resigned, allowing the new members to address pending complaints. Additional, unnecessary intervention will create an environment in which any future Board of Ethics may feel intimidated when faced with complaints against selectmen.

This situation has already become a distracting sideshow, consuming valuable town time and resources that could be better spent addressing actual civic issues and needs. The community deserves better.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

5/12/23 AMENDMENT
Thank you so much for your support and feedback!

We also thank First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor for her leadership and vocal support of the Board of Ethics members!

Additionally, we ask Selectman Mohabeer to take the necessary steps to cancel the June 1st public hearing.  And, as she did in the May 4 Board of Selectmen meeting, we expect Selectwoman Jenner to recuse herself, as she was the subject of the original ethics complaint that led to this series of unfortunate events.
