Mental health problems are very common and can dramatically impact our lives. In any given year, it is estimated that 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. The symptoms of mental illness are often misunderstood, and a significant amount of stereotypes are perpetuated.
Every year, the #BellLetsTalk initiative promotes awareness and action for fighting stigma, improving access to care and supporting research in mental health. But when I look around, I still see so many people in BC and in Canada without accessible and adequate services to address their mental health needs. Let’s turn our words into actions: #LetsACT!
Like physical health, maintaining good mental health requires us to develop and maintain good habits and to check in with a professional to avoid issues from becoming more serious than they need to.
Our province can lead the way regarding mental health care. I'm calling on the Minister of Mental Health & Addictions Judy Darcy to take the steps required to ensure that British Columbians have access to individual counselling under the Medical Services Plan.
Join me in asking for our government to take ACTION towards guaranteeing accessible mental health services in BC.
