Let us own chickens!

The Issue

As a homeowner within the city limits of Grandview, WA, rising inflation and consistent price hikes and shortages of eggs at the grocery stores have greatly impacted my ability to provide for my family. Today, I bring forth a proposal, a call for change that aims to empower homeowners like myself - allow us to own and raise chickens for personal use and consumption of goods.

Poultry farming boasts numerous advantages. Not only does it provide a fresh and inexhaustible supply of healthy eggs, it also serves as a sustainable method to manage food waste. Moreover, it contributes to local self-reliance and fosters a sense of community; properties shared by many successful cities across the nation.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, households that raise chickens experience improved nutrition and food security, they also report benefits from the manure for gardening, pest control, and as a source of additional income (FAO, 2014). However, in our city, residents are missing out on these benefits due to current municipal bylaws against raising poultry within city limits.

At such a time when our local economy forces us to reconfigure our ways of living, I believe allowing homeowners to raise chickens could be a landmark policy that works to alleviate the economic strain on families whilst creating a more self-efficient community. Please stand with me in urging the Grandview City Council to reconsider their stand on urban poultry farming and making our living more sustainable. Sign this petition today, and help us take a step towards a self-sufficient future.
