Let trans women and girls back into Girl Guiding UK

Let trans women and girls back into Girl Guiding UK

The Issue

My name is Ash, I am a proud member of the LGBTQIA2+ community, and identify as Transgender and Non-binary. It is with great concern and urgency that I address an issue that has more significant implications than many might consider: the exclusion of trans women and girls from Girl Guiding UK. In a world that claims to strive for equality, we are faced with policies that seem to push us further from our goals of inclusivity, understanding, and acceptance.

The Girl Guiding UK organisation, renowned for its history of empowering young women and girls through development opportunities and fostering lifelong friendships, should optimise inclusion. Truly supporting girls means supporting all girls, regardless of their gender identity. Excluding trans women and girls sends a message that their identities are not valid, which can contribute to stigma, mental health challenges, and a sense of alienation.

Studies have shown that inclusive environments not only benefit those who are directly included but also enhance empathy and understanding among all members. According to the Stonewall School Report 2017, nearly 64% of trans pupils experience bullying at school for being LGBTQIA2+, and inclusion in programs like Girl Guiding can create safe spaces where they can express themselves freely without fear of discrimination.

Moreover, Girl Guiding UK's Promise, which centers on "being true to oneself and developing one's potential," should apply universally and not exclude based on gender identity. We must ask, how can these values be upheld if we are turning away those who seek empowerment and support under their banners?

I invite the leadership of Girl Guiding UK to take a stand for inclusivity by reversing their stance and allowing trans women and girls to participate equally. This change not only aligns with their mission of developing courage, confidence, and character in young women but also demonstrates leadership on the path towards gender equality and respect for diversity.

Let's embrace every girl and provide them with the opportunities to flourish. Join me in urging Girl Guiding UK to welcome everyone's true self and stand united in advocating for an inclusive community. Please sign the petition to help us create a more inclusive world for all girls, including transgender and non-binary individuals. Together, we can make a difference.
