130,000 online petitioners who all hold the same wish were rejected by the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC).

On June 25th, the petition starters consisting of Japanese, Taiwanese, and American citizens gathered at the building where the JOC is located in front of the Tokyo National Stadium to deliver the message. Although they had attempted to reach out to a representative beforehand, they received no response from them - so they came. 

"We are not here to criticize anything." "We are here with more than 100,000 people's wishes. We can't just turn away and go home." After a 10-minute argument with the guardsmen, they were never given a chance to speak to a representative nor leave the signatures.

This "how to call Taiwan" issue is much more complex than imagined. The continent claiming "One China" does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country. Since the 1980s, whenever Taiwan participates in an international competition like the Olympics, the word "Chinese Taipei" has been used. It's understandable that the JOC does not want to be involved in this, to a certain extent.

However, the petition is one of the ways to show what people think. The JOC is a public interest incorporated foundation which is subsidized by the country. Moreover, without an understanding of public opinion, their principle purpose of "Olympism" cannot be promoted. If they just send people away, Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games who preached Friendship and Solidarity would cry.

"Taiwan cannot use their national flag or country’s name. It's not fair," says Lindell Lucy, one of the petition starters and an American high school teacher based in Tokyo. His ask is very simple. I think we need to listen as this year's host country.

チャイニーズ・タイペイ

「チャイニーズ・タイペイ」ではなく「台湾」として五輪へ―。そんな思いが詰まった13万筆を超えるオンライン署名を、JOC（日本オリンピック委員会）は受け取らなかった。

　25日、署名を呼び掛けた日本、台湾、米国の人たちが直接届けようと、新国立競技場向かいのJOCにが入るビルに集まった。事前に担当者に面会を希望したものの、応じてもらえず、アポ無しでの訪問だった。

「批判するわけではない。署名を渡したいだけ」「10万人以上に委託されている。帰るわけにはいかない」。入館を拒否する警備員と10分ほど入口で押し問答となったが、取り次いでもらうことも、受付に署名を預かってもらうことすらもできず、立ち去った。

　この呼称の問題は根が深い。「一つの中国」を主張する大陸側は台湾を国として認めていない。１９８０年代以降、台湾が五輪など国際大会に参加する際は「チャイニーズ・タイペイ」が使われている。JOCがこの問題に関与したくないことは一定、理解できる。

　でも、署名は一つの民意の表れだ。JOCは公益財団法人であり、国から補助金が出ている。まして国民の理解がなくして本来の目的である「オリンピズム」の促進は図れない。門前払いをしていては、友情、連帯を説いた近代五輪の父であるクーベルタンが泣く。

「台湾はカントリーネームを使えない。それはフェアではない」。署名活動をする東京在住の米国人高校教師リンデル・ルーシーさんの訴えは、いたってシンプルだ。今夏のホスト国として耳を傾ける必要があるように思う。

中華台北？連奧運之父-古柏坦聽了都想哭。

超過13萬人的集體訴求被日本奧委會拒於門外。

6月25日，來自日本、台灣和美國的連署發起人聚集在東京奧運主場館-新國立競技場前，於日本奧委會所在的大樓試圖遞交請願書。他們曾事先聯繫日本奧委會，但未曾得到任何回音，所以決定親自前來陳情。

「我們並不是要來指責任何人。」

「我們背負10多萬人的共同訴求，我們不能說走就走。」

連署發起人在入口被攔下，與大樓警衛僵持了約10分鐘，未得到與任何一位官方代表見面的機會，也無從遞送連署書面資料。

「台灣正名」議題遠比想像來得複雜。尤其在中國聲稱的「一個中國」並不承認台灣是一個主權獨立國家的前提之下；而且自1980年代以來，台灣凡是參加世界奧運這等國際運動賽事，就一律被迫使用「中華台北」這個名稱。因此可以理解日本奧委會不希望被捲入這項爭議當中。

然而，請願連署代表了一群民眾的集體共識，日本奧委會身為政府資助的公共利益法人基金會，連群眾民意都置若罔聞，又如何達到宣揚《奧林匹克主義》的活動宗旨。想必一心希望藉由奧運促進國際友誼和團結的奧運之父-古柏坦，若是地下有知，也會感到難過吧。

「台灣不能用自己的國旗和國名參賽，這是不公平的。」 其中一名連署發起者—任教於東京的美國高中教師 Lindell Lucy 說到。而我認為身為主辦國的我們，應該在今年夏天，向世界做出一個好的示範。
