LET’S TAKE ACTION Stop the Housing Crisis

LET’S TAKE ACTION Stop the Housing Crisis
The Issue
The housing crisis in Madison has stripped UW-Madison students of their financial security. Rent increased by 30% from 2020 to 2023. The average UW student rent is over $1200, yet $980 is advertised as the norm. Due to the cost of housing, a significant proportion of students share a room.
To meet demand, Dane County must produce 139,000 units by 2040, but it has been underbuilding by 2,000 units annually. Meanwhile, dorms are at 114% capacity.
State preemption, a series of laws that block the City of Madison from regulating housing, has severely handicapped the ability of the city to tackle the housing crisis.
To make housing more affordable in Madison, we demand that our lawmakers remove preemption to allow the city to address our housing crisis.
Add your signature to show our lawmakers that you care about ensuring housing affordability for all students at UW-Madison and all of Wisconsin.
