Let's Stop Illegal Hunting To Orangutan and Other Endangered Species!

Masalahnya

Good morning everyone, we are students in grades 6-7 from Sekolah HighScope Bintaro. As a student, we should take great care of the environment as a part of our contribution to the community. We could start by spreading awareness about the endangered species due to habitat loss/destruction and illegal hunting in Indonesia.

Ecosystem is where living things such as trees, animals, and even humans. An ecosystem is an essential place since it consists of many living and non-living things, if the ecosystem was harmed the living things that lived inside it would also get harmed and make the ecosystem imbalanced. One of the causes of an imbalance in the ecosystem is illegal hunting that leads to habitat loss that endangers the species.

Indonesia is rich for their variative wildlife species. But, it is also one of the top countries involved in illegally exporting endangered animals. Humans take advantage of hunting a lot of animals to benefit themselves. They use the animals to export it to other countries by selling them and even using their skin for the fashion industry. In the period 2015-2022, the Ministry handled 438 cases of illegal hunting in Indonesia.

The problem is there are alot of cases in Indonesia about illegal hunting. The animal we are focusing on are orangutans which get affected the most from illegal hunting. The population of orangutans decreases every year and has started from 2007 till now. According to Science Direct Biological Conservation in Central Sumatera by the year 2007-2010 there were 192 cases of incidents regarding orangutans, In 2011-2013 there were 102 cases, In 2014-2016 there were 133 cases, In 2017-2019 there were 64 cases(total of cases from 2007-2019 is 493 cases), till now the number of cases of orangutan has been increasing.

The main cause of why the amount of orangutans decreases and is becoming endangered species is because of the fashion industry. The fashion industry including well known brands are using the animals skin to make clothing, bags and others. The reason why they hunt down orangutans is for the expansion of oil palm plantations. Indonesia is also one of the top countries involved in illegally exploiting endangered animals to make profit by selling their bones and other body parts. Humans take advantage of hunting a lot of animals to benefit themselves. In the period 2015-2022, the Ministry handled 438 cases of illegal hunting in Indonesia. The most common animal hunted is the orangutan. They also hunt wild animals and keep them as their illegal pet which is called poaching.

From the causes above, it is stated that most of the causes are to benefit humans even though it affects negatively to the ecosystem. It creates an imbalance of the ecosystem if the population of a species (orangutan) decreases. It will create an imbalance for the ecosystem because the decrease of a species’s population will disrupt the food chain.

Well, some solution that we think everyone can do is to obey laws regarding illegal hunting and trading. As a part of the people that already know further information regarding the Illegal hunting that is happening in Indonesia. We can spread awareness to other people so that they will be more aware of this problem. Our proposed solution is advising the government to have more people monitor the orangutans in the forest where they live and protect them from the illegal hunting around the forest. Another solution we came up with was expanding and strengthening the law that is already by the government which is on Pasal 83 Ayat 1 Huruf b, Undang-undang R.I. The third solution we have come up with is spending your conservation money wisely and not spend it on the crime prevention programs that are not confirmed they will actually help and review all of the crime prevention programs your planning to help to make sure it isn't a scam, you can know it is safe by seeing if its from the government or if it is trusted by the government. The last reason we have thought about is by making a specialized forest for conservation of orangutans to keep them safe from poaching, killing, and trading happening here in Indonesia.

That’s all from our Petition about illegal hunting in Central Kalimantan. Let's stop illegal hunting in every way for the animals that are affected by these problems and let's also spread awareness about it! Well, Thank You For Reading Our Petition!
