Let's Start a Fully Student-Run SMA newspaper in order to express our voices!
The Issue
As a student at St.Mary's Academy, I am writing this petition in order to increase the voices of students inside the school via a fully student-run newspaper. Although we have students on many levels of student government within our community, I believe that creating a student newspaper will strengthen our communities, empower students, and allow us to have deeper conversations about complex issues.
Firstly, a fully student-run newspaper would allow us to highlight the strong communities we have within our school. Within the newspaper, student journalists could cover school sports team events as well as the small good deeds people do in our community. This could allow our school to be more deeply connected, and highlight those who are excelling around us. In turn, aspects of our school that aren't talked about on the intercom as much as sports(such as robotics and marians/orchestra) will get the attention they deserve from the school community. It will also allow us to highlight special individuals who deserve attention for their good deeds.
Second of all, the newspaper would empower students. Within the student-run newspaper, students who aren't heavily involved in the newspaper can send Opinion pieces and express their opinions freely without fear of retaliation. In addition, it would allow us to be a independent watchdog of SMA's policies and empower us to create further change in the community if we see anything problematic.
Finally, this school newspaper would allow students to have deeper discussions about issues inside and outside the classroom. Across many of our classes, we have had many discussions about the current progression of technology and the ethical implications of technology such as AI in our world. If students had a hub to easily engage in conversation outside of the classroom, it would allow us to grow deeper as individuals in the SNJM values and make us a better community overall.
I really love this school and it would be great if there were more open hubs for student voices :)
This newspaper is also very different from the Newsletter Club, as it will only cover news inside and outside the school, not be a hub for creative work. Just for clarification :)
