The Issue

ELY THE SADDEST ELEPHANT IN THE WORLD

Ely is a female elephant currently held in a zoo in Mexico City.  Ely is about 38 years old, and she has suffered abuse and neglect for her entire life. She spent her first 29 years in a circus, and now she is used as a spectacle to attract visitors to the San Juan de Aragón Zoo in Mexico City. She is known as "The Saddest Elephant in the World" because she has never had any companionship or stimulation. She often injures herself by rubbing against the bars of her enclosure or banging on the doors. She is severely underweight and has many skin and joint problems from the unnatural movements and activities she was forced to do in the circus and the zoo. The zoo also cut her tusks very short, claiming it was for her own good, but in reality, it was because she got stuck in the narrow passages of her enclosure and they had to break her free. (This is documented by SEDEMA, the Mexican Secretary of the Environment.)  We urge the authorities, social media influencers, and everyone who can use their voice to help us achieve our goal of sending Ely to the Brazil Sanctuary of Elephants. This sanctuary has the infrastructure to provide a spacious and comfortable environment for their rescued elephants. There, Ely will have a chance to live a free, loving, and healthy life. We can transform her from "The Saddest Elephant in the World" to "The Happiest Elephant in the World".
