The mismanagement of the Gippsland Lakes fishery belongs to those in Government and includes the Victorian Fisheries Authority. The Gippsland Lakes falls under the responsibility of a number of ministry portfolios and shared areas of responsibility. We are unable to identify one minister who has overarching responsibility for this precious resource. Jaalà Pulford has fisheries, Lily D'Ambrosio environment, Lisa Neville is water and Harriet Shing represents Gippsland. Tim Bull is the local member and should be making representations to Parliament regarding the poor state of the ecology and fishery of the Gippsland Lakes. Let's also not forget the many management authorities ; the Gippsland Lakes Co-ordinating Committee (appointed in 2016), DELWP, Parks Victoria, the Catchment Management (East and West) Authority (s), Gippsland Ports, EPA and many others who bear some responsibility for the current situation in the Lakes. The declining fishery and ecology has been apparent for decades. We have enough government and management reports and audits, dating back to early last century, on our dining room table to block the entrance!!! The Auditor Generals Report on Meeting the obligations to Protect Ramsar Wetlands in 2016 was the closest thing we have seen to getting a positive reaction by Government. (basically from a slap on the wrist) What is missing is the political will and initiative to act and acknowledge there is a problem with the Lakes as a whole. Hundreds of millions of dollars, if not more, have been and are still being spent to mismanage a declining industry while continuing to trash one of the most significant and important waterways and wetlands in Australia.
