Happy Aloha Friday!
The Fight is Not Over But We Have Some Encouraging News!
1. We resumed our lobbying in November, 2020. A CIP request for $3.3 million to cool our Complex Area was submitted again by three of our four area officials even though we didn't think the legislature would grant the DOE any CIP money.
2. Track HB200. We have 2 line items in the budget for Kaiser
Complex Area: the $3.3 million to cool Kaiser Complex
classrooms (Yay!), and Senator Chris Lee's $600,000 for
heat abatement at Kaiser High School.
Language in the bill from our CIP request: the “Design,
construction, and equipment for electrical upgrades and for
air conditioning classrooms.”
3. Legislative session ends April 29th. We hope the house
passes our line items for our complex area and we have
good news next Friday!
4. Furthermore, DOE will be receiving federal funds from the
CARES Act specifically for heat abatement for all Hawaii
classrooms. The Senate and House budget have to agree. It
could be between $25-35 million.
