Let’s call Bangladeshi food Bangladeshi and Indian food Indian !
The Issue
Having lived abroad for 17 years, I have noticed a troubling trend: Bangladeshi restaurant owners self-identifying their establishments as Indian. This misrepresentation is misleading the public and is an unfair practice. While I proudly welcome and appreciate the multicultural gastronomic landscape, the integrity of distinct cultural identities must be preserved.
Indian cuisine is wonderfully diverse, reflecting the vast and rich tapestry of our regions, cultures, and traditions. However, the authenticity of our culinary heritage becomes diluted when Bangladeshi restaurateurs promote their businesses as Indian establishments. The fusion of elements from Bangladeshi cuisine not only misleads customers but also distorts the perception of Indian gastronomy. Despite Banladeshi cuisine having its own rich narrative, the misrepresentation raises the question - if the public seemingly doesn't appreciate their cuisine on its own, why validate it with an Indian label?
Approximately 80% of the so-called "Indian" restaurants in the area are owned by Bangladeshi entrepreneurs. This colonization of Indian food spaces does greater harm to the preservation, promotion, and respect of our culinary culture abroad.
With this petition, we demand a clear and accurate identification of restaurant ownership and nationality by all establishments offering ethnic cuisine, specifically in this case, to differentiate between Indian and Bangladeshi establishments. Only then can we achieve a true celebration of gastronomic diversity, honoring the integrity of each culinary heritage.
Every culture deserves accurate representation and recognition. Let's come together to show support for this cause and endorse culinary authenticity. Please sign this petition to demand transparency and accurate cultural representation in the restaurant business.
