Living around Campbell University, I've witnessed firsthand the need for improved infrastructure to support our active community. As a retired athlete and a proud member of this community and student, I have embraced running as a way to maintain my health and well-being. However, each time I get motivated for a run, I'm reminded of the hazards that confront us daily due to the lack of safe and accessible sidewalks on our main street.

Every day, I see dozens of community members, from students to fellow residents, walking and running on the roadside—risking their safety due to inadequate pedestrian spaces. The absence of a dedicated sidewalk forces us onto the streets, mingling with traffic, and creating a potential safety hazard not only for pedestrians but also for drivers navigating these busy roads.

Building a sidewalk would not only enhance the safety for all of us who cherish staying active, but it would also promote a more connected and mobile community. In an age where third spaces are dying, supporting walking and running can foster a healthier lifestyle and strengthen community. 

Moreover, studies have consistently shown that communities investing in pedestrian infrastructure experience lower accident rates and improved quality of life. According to the National Complete Streets Coalition, streets that are designed for pedestrian access can reduce accidents by up to 28% and significantly enhance the safety of all road users. Implementing these changes would reflect our commitment to the well-being and safety of everyone in our town.

I call upon our local government, along with the Campbell University administration, to prioritize the construction of a sidewalk along the main street. This reasonable and essential addition can be a cornerstone in our community, ensuring that every walker and runner feels secure as they pursue their daily activities.
