Let’s build a pump track - Washington

The Issue

Washington is a brilliant place to live, with great communities, parks and open spaces, but there’s currently nowhere locally for young people and families to safely ride bikes, scooters or skateboards in a fun, purpose-built environment.

A pump track in Washington would give children, teenagers and adults an exciting outdoor facility that encourages exercise, builds confidence and helps develop riding skills in a safe and positive space. Pump tracks are designed for bikes, scooters, skateboards and balance bikes, making them something the whole community can enjoy together.

Across the North East, pump tracks are becoming hugely popular community facilities, with the new South Tyneside Bike Park already attracting lots of families and young riders. Right now, many Washington families have to travel outside the area to use facilities like these. Washington has several potential locations that could be suitable for a track and would provide a fantastic addition to the area.

As cycling, BMX, skateboarding and scooter sports continue to grow in popularity, a pump track would create opportunities for young people to get active, improve mental and physical wellbeing, socialise outdoors and spend less time on phones and screens.

A facility like this could also:

encourage healthier lifestyles
provide a positive activity for local young people
improve community spaces
bring families together
attract visitors from surrounding areas
create a lasting investment for Washington
We would love to see Sunderland City Council explore the possibility of bringing a community pump track and bike park to Washington.
