Let Retro Walk: Support a Guide Dog in Training at Graduation

Let Retro Walk: Support a Guide Dog in Training at Graduation

The Issue

To: Dr. Ahern, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley Unified School District Administration

From: Christian Tan and the Monte Vista Community

Date: June 2nd, 2025

Subject: Request to Allow Guide Dog in Training to Participate in Graduation Ceremony

We, the undersigned students, families, staff, and supporters of Monte Vista, respectfully request that Christian Tan be allowed to walk at the graduation ceremony with their guide dog in training, Retro.

Retro is not a pet, but a service dog in training, preparing for a life of helping individuals with disabilities live more independently and safely. His presence at graduation would not only support Christian but also serve as a powerful symbol of inclusion, accessibility, and the values of compassion and education we celebrate as a school community.

Graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Christian has worked hard to reach this milestone, and Retro has played a crucial role in that journey. Retro walking across the stage will send a positive message about disability awareness and accessibility.

We believe Monte Vista has the opportunity to lead by example—to stand for equity, support service animals in training, and acknowledge the diversity and experiences within our student body.

We ask the administration to reconsider its position and allow Retro to accompany Christian across the graduation stage.

Thank you for your time and commitment to creating an inclusive environment.

Sincerely,

Christian Tan
