Let owners choose!
The Issue
Do you own a pet/animal? Please read this.
We love our veterinarians but things could be better for them, us and especially our animals. Not everyone has access to a veterinarian.
Unfortunately the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Act (VMA) is outdated and does not allow alternative treatments outside those provided by a vet. According to Section 2 of the Act no one other than a vet is allowed to provide any treatment (even preventative), give advice, teach or do research. What does this mean?
It means according to the VMA you are not allowed to even pick a tick off of someone's dog or you would be illegally practicing veterinary medicine. Your groomer is not legally allowed to trim your pet's nails or give a flea bath (or even advise you to give your pet one). It is not lawful to have someone give your pet a massage, chiropractic treatment or acupuncture. If you have a farrier, they are committing an offence every time they work on your horse.
If you are a 4-H leader you are not allowed to teach how to care for an animal. And if you want to do a school project on an animal you are not allowed to do research.
Feed store...can't give advice on what to feed an animal - illegal.
Sound ridiculous? It is. Please help us change this. You can help by contacting your MLA and letting them know changes to the VMA need to be made.
Let veterinarians have more time to deal with the serious issues pets / animals have. Let owners have a choice when it comes to caring for their own animals.
