2 Million Voters Excluded

Maharashtra heads for local body polls in January 2026. Many high profile civic units like the BMC will be up for grabs.

Yet the Election Commission will use outdated electoral rolls from July 2024 for the same. This means no elegible voter born after 1st October 2006 will be able to cast their vote.

It is the duty of the ECI to update the rolls at the end of each year. This was not done last year. And as a result of this, around 20 lakh young voters who turned 18 in the interval will be unable to cast their vote. We are being punished for bureaucratic negligence.

This is a petition requesting (a) the State Election Commission to conduct an SSR and release fresh electoral rolls, including the lakhs of voters who recently turned 18 (b) to the Hon'ble Court to extend its 31st January 2025 deadline for the polls to facilitate said SSR.
