The Issue

Music is the heartbeat of our community. It brings us together, creates a sense of belonging, and fosters a vibrant culture of creativity and expression that is invaluable in today's world. As a band manager who has witnessed the struggles musicians face to be heard, I know firsthand the challenges involved in organizing house shows and small music events. These events are essential for up-and-coming artists to share their voice and build their audience, yet they often face unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles that stifle their potential.

To address this, I am calling for the establishment of a "Student House Show Permit". This would be a simple and effective solution, streamlining the process for hosting small-scale music events. Similar initiatives already exist in cities known for their thriving music scenes, offering a model we can follow.

The permit could entail an easy-to-fill online form that outlines clear parameters, such as a noise cutoff time (11:00 pm) and days that are allowed to host (e.g. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). Importantly, such a permit would prevent police disruption until after 11:30 PM, allowing these events to breathe and thrive without undue interference.

We could further enhance community engagement and reduce risk, with some suggestions including, having mandatory breathalyzers at the entrance of the houses, limiting capacity, etc. to avoid MIP. Also, by designating specific days that these events can happen, creating a predictable and supportive environment for musicians and music lovers. Through these measures, we can cultivate a supportive ecosystem that encourages artistic growth and fosters deeper connections within our communities.

Our goal is not only to support musicians but to celebrate the communal spirit of music that transcends boundaries and unites us all. I invite city officials and community stakeholders to consider this initiative, as it is not only realistic but essential for nurturing a flourishing cultural landscape. Let us come together to create opportunities for artists and allow music to continue to build bridges and transform lives.

Please sign this petition to support the creation of a "Student House Show Permit", paving the way for musical expression and community development through vibrant local events.
