A Case for Free to Roam Laws in England

In 2023, I nearly lost my life to illness. The experience left me not just physically weak but mentally drained. After recovering, I found myself trapped in a cycle of depression, struggling to reintegrate into public spaces. It wasn’t until I started hiking, camping, and adventuring that I truly began to heal. Nature became my sanctuary. The open landscapes, fresh air, and solitude provided a sense of peace I had never found elsewhere. I believe that everyone should have access to this kind of healing experience, but in England, our restrictive land access laws make that difficult.

In Scotland, the Right to Roam laws allow people to explore nature freely, camp in the wild, and reconnect with the land. England, by contrast, remains bound by outdated laws that limit access to large swathes of natural beauty. This restriction does more harm than good. A free-to-roam policy in England would bring three major benefits:
 1. Crime Prevention – Giving people the freedom to explore the outdoors could reduce crime by providing a healthier alternative to idleness or negative urban influences. Many young people in suburban towns have limited options for recreation, leading to boredom, frustration, and, in some cases, criminal activity. The ability to camp, hike, and explore freely would offer a productive and fulfilling outlet, diverting individuals from potential trouble.
 2. Mental Health Benefits – My own experience is proof that nature has a profound effect on mental well-being. Anxiety, depression, and stress are rampant in modern society, yet we continue to restrict access to one of the best natural remedies: the outdoors. Studies have shown that time spent in nature reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and boosts overall happiness. Freeing up land for public enjoyment would allow more people to access these benefits.
 3. A More Active Population – England, like much of the developed world, struggles with rising obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Encouraging people to engage with the outdoors through wild camping and hiking would naturally increase physical activity levels. Exercise doesn’t always need to be structured or forced—sometimes, the simple act of moving through nature is enough to foster a healthier lifestyle.

The human brain was designed for a life of movement, exploration, and survival in the natural world. Modern society has distanced us from these instincts, but sometimes, regressing—even for a moment—can be the best way to move forward. England has the opportunity to embrace a healthier, freer future by adopting a right-to-roam system similar to Scotland’s. The benefits are clear, and the time for change is now.
