Let Danny Tommo gain bail
The Issue
Danny Tommo, a tireless anti-migrant activist, has found himself in a dire situation. As a concerned community member and supporter of his work, I'm compelled to speak up and urge the authorities to reconsider their decision to deny him bail. Danny, whose real name is Daniel Thomas, has been remanded in custody at Portsmouth Crown Court, with a trial date set unbelievably far from now on 1st March 2027. This leaves him separated from his family and unable to continue his campaign against matters he feels passionately about.
Danny, a father of four, was charged with criminal damage after a livestream showed him puncturing a dinghy in the English Channel. From Danny's perspective, his actions were not about causing harm but about raising awareness of the complex issues surrounding migrant crossings. The location evidence for the charges does not warrant this draconian approach of lengthy pre-trial detention, infringing upon his basic right to bail especially when the court date is many years away.
Denying Danny bail not only strips him of precious years he could have spent with his children but also prevents him from pursuing the advocacy that he believes is crucial. Moreover, keeping him in remand places undue strain on the already overburdened judicial system and the correctional facilities involved.
We acknowledge the legal process and do not seek to obstruct justice; rather, we appeal for fairness and rationality in its application. Granting bail would permit Danny to responsibly wait for his trial while still contributing positively to his community and family.
Please join me in urging the court to allow Danny Tommo the opportunity to post bail. It is not just about him; it's about ensuring a fair judicial process, reuniting a father with his children, and upholding the rights of citizens to participate in public discourse without enduring undue prolonged detention.
