Let Citizens and Animal Groups Participate in Inspections of Korean Dog Breeding Farms!!!
The Issue
Hello. I am a Korean international school student with deep interested in animal welfare. In Korea, many breeding farms are still often being operated in a poor environment, where unhealthy dogs are experiencing abuse and neglect in unsanitary environments. I believe one of the main reasons this problem continues is the difficulty in properly inspecting these facilities. Since increasing the frequency of official inspections is not always realistic, I am proposing this solution.
Currently, the planning inspection is carried out according to the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs or the local government and the conditions are very difficult. The interviews that I had with the Korean Animal Welfare Association showed that they found it difficult to find illegal elements of the breeding farms due to this issue.
Therefore, I will ask for legal basis for normal citizens and animal protection groups to be able to participate in the field inspection or joint inspection. This can make the surveillance system more transparent, increase the effectiveness of the inspection, and eventually contribute to reducing animal abuse.
Female dogs are forced to breed puppies until their death (multiple times a year), being separated with their puppies before even 1 month. The puppies are then taken to dog auction houses to be sold to pet shops. Most dogs in pets shops are from breeding farms. If the puppies are not sold up until a certain age, they are sent back to breeding farms to continue this cruel cycle or become dog soup, 개소주 or 보신탕 (Dog meat is banned officially starting from 2027).
Thank you for taking the time to consider this ongoing issue. I believe that with greater interest from people, we can make meaningful progress toward protecting animals and further improving their welfare. I hope our voices become the starting point for a better society for animals.
Please remember the dogs who are locked up in breeding farms their entire lives, giving birth to puppies and only to face a miserable death.
