Let Canada Welcome The War Victim Orphaned Palestinian Children

The Issue

'11 year old Razan  lost almost all her family members in bombing in the first weeks of the war. Her mother, father, brother, and two sisters were killed. Razan's leg was also injured and had to be amputated. Following the surgery, her wound got infected. Razan is now being taken care of by her aunt and uncle, all of whom have been displaced to Rafah.'(Source- UNICEF)

Since October 7, 2023 more than 14000 children were killed in Gaza. According to an Oxfam International report published on September 30, 2024 more than 25000 children lost their one or both parents in the conflict and they are  unaccompanied or detached from immediate family members. Al Jazeera quoted Save the Children on February 15, 2024 that more than 10 children are losing both or 1 leg a day. Their injuries are so severe that even their family members are struggling to recognise them. Injured children are living an inhuman life in the war ravaged city without care and attention. Children there face dire consequences, including loss of life, injuries, and psychological trauma besides living every moment with the fear of death or injury. A generation of orphaned and disabled children are moving towards an uncertain future.

Canada welcomes refugees from different countries. Unlike the ceasefire issue which is up to several other countries' decisions, welcoming children and refugees is absolutely the discretion of the Canadian government.

On humanitarian and compassionate grounds the Canadian government can bring in orphaned and vulnerable children from Gaza. They can be accommodated in different children’s villages or with interested families in foster care.

Also, there are many couples and single people waiting in line to adopt children. These children can be adopted by those people as well. There might be other ways to accommodate them.

With proper care, well education and sufficient facilities these children can grow up to human resources that will contribute to the development of the country in the near future.

No one can decide where, when and in which family they are born. Children in Gaza no way deserve what they are going through for more than a year. Let's save some lives and let the children of Gaza live their life.
