Let Bob keep his dog. Bob (87) lived in a care home with his close companion Darkie

This petition had 270,851 supporters

This petition was first posted in December 2016 when Tracey Streit's father told her about the plight of his former work colleague Bob Harvey, an 87 year old, terminally ill tenant of a private sector Care Home.

Bob had moved to the home with his wife Margaret 4 years earlier.  Margaret had dementia and her condition was deteriorating rapidly. Burnfoot Hall Care Home in Ecclefechan, one of 7 Care Homes run by Mead Medical Services Ltd, was chosen because they specialised in caring for dementia sufferers, but also because they had a positive pet policy.

Bob and Margaret had a pet miniature Schnauzer dog which they had from a pup and they were all devoted to one another. The Care Home management assured them that their pet could remain with them and that they would have 'a home for life'.

Two years later, Margaret sadly passed away but Bob was allowed to stay on with his dog, as a Tenant.

Bob is aged 87 and suffered total renal failure 17 years ago. Three mornings each week he travels to Carlisle Infirmary to undergo dialysis and will need to continue doing so for the rest of his days.

Last Autumn, 2 new managers took over at the Care Home and problems began straight away.

Last December Mead Medical announced that the dog must be removed from the Home, or Bob must leave.

The petition speaking out to support Bob reached over 250,000 signatures, yet Mead Medical were unmoved and announced that Bob's Tenancy would be terminated in April.

Bob now lives alone with his dog in a private sector bungalow.

Bob's case raises so many issues about how our elderly are being treated in the private sector and the risks they face because Regulators such as the CQC and the Care Inspectorate have no real power to control how private Companies operate.

These are issues which not only affect all elderly people who currently rely on private sector Care and their loved one's. We all face the possibility of relying on available care services as our circumstances change and people are increasingly being forced to turn to private care provision as public funding faces increased pressures.

Appeals have gone out to all leading politicians in both London and Edinburgh and to the press/media, asking them to take this up. But their silence is deafening.

We now need to push the petition to 300,000 signatures, preferably before the current election campaign is over, then beyond to 500,000

and then one million.

As public support for Bob and his devoted pet and all of our vulnerable elderly citizens builds, so politicians will no longer feel able to ignore the many issues which this raises.

Please continue to spread the word, promote savebobsdog.

Bob is overwhelmed by the amazing support which he has received so far and thanks everyone for their ongoing support.

Updates will follow regularly.

Thank You All

Team Bob
